Cars – No 14

Kept you waiting haven’t I?

My 14th, and most lamentable, car was a 1978 VB Commodore SL with the 3.3 litre straight 6 and Tri-matic auto. No that is not me pictured above, it is in fact a promo photo for the model. Once again I find myself not having an photo of my actual car.

Mine was purchased early- to mid-1985 not long after the big prang in the TX5. In deep metallic green duco it cost around $7100 (new price around $9000). Its current value would be around $400 probably.

I hated this car … I still cannot figure out what made me buy the bloody thing. It was “floaty” to drive, noisy in the motor and just plain “not right” to sit in. Its only plus was that it was reliable.

It lasted under a year, to be replaced by something just a little more appropriate for a 30 year old bachelor.

  1. Spoilt all my fun by saying it wasn’t you in the picture! I was trying to guess whether you were the one with the mo and lego man haircut or the beanie!

  2. If that WAS you in the beanie…..at least you had a nice arse. But don’t knock Commodores man.

  3. Still would’ve handled better than the Kingswood, even if the styling did look like it was done by the Incorporated Steam Train Company.

  4. And in ‘VB’, the car had a designation that would have made deros across Victoria unite! Surely the title would have been responsible for 50% of sales by itself! Still, at least you didn’t own a Camira…
