Cars – No 13

Well, finally, here we are back at the Cars Project again. Car 13 was a 1983 Ford Telstar TX5, bought brand new some time around August that year from memory. On the road this was around $13,500, now it is probably worth about $135! Unfortunately these things did not age all that well.

However, in its day, is was a pretty nice jigger. Mine was maroon in colour with tan cloth and a nice set of after market wheels. I would hasten to add that mine got through its life without the bloody car-bra on the example above! With a 2 litre motor and 5 speed transmission they were a great cruising car, especially as they also came with this tricky little switch that moved the car from a soft to a “sports” ride, pretty advanced for 1983 really.

My memory is that it had central locking, stereo cassette of course and aircon as standard.

I loved this car so much that I actually considered buying it back again a couple of years after I sold it when I saw it in a local car yard!

But then I remembered why I did sell the thing. You see, this car was the only one in which I had a really serious prang. Some young kid came around a corner in Coromandel Valley way too fast late one night and managed to wipe out the whole driver’s side of the TX5, fortunately not injuring me at all. Funny things is that this happened only 2 kms from where we live now. The repair bill on the TX5 was around $5000 from memory, and I never felt that it tracked properly after that.

So I sold it, trading it on what was definitely the worse car I have owned … but that is another story.

So, car number 13 (not so lucky for me I guess) was a 1983 Ford Telstar TX5.
