Clare July 2008

It was my birthday last Friday and Hedy and I once again visited the Clare Valley for the weekend, staying for the third time in Dennis Cottage in Auburn. The owner again offered a free extra night as we were returning customers, so Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights it was!

Our friends John and Jo joined us for lunch at Skillogallee Winery, and we had a wonderful afternoon dining under the heaters out on the verandah. Good food, great wine and even better company made it a great way to spend my birthday. Friday evening was spent in the cottage, neither of us could face much more than cheese and crackers after such a lunch.

Once I worked through the slight headache the next morning, Hedy and I took the ritual walk along the main street of Clare, before moving on to Penna Lane for a platter lunch and … yes … another glass or two of wine. We then picked up a picnic basket to give us food for the next day or so before retiring back to the cottage to enjoy the footy … not!

Dinner that evening was in the Rising Sun Hotel in Auburn … nice this time but maybe not as great as usual to be honest.

The next day we tripped out to Mintaro to view the property that our friends Andy and Seona are rebuilding. As you can see below it is a mammoth task they have undertaken, but it’s not hard to see the potential … well actually I lie, it’s bloody near impossible to see anything other than a ruin right now! We wish them well!

[image:1234:c][newline] We spent the balance of Sunday in the cottage catching up on some TV shows I had brought with us on the laptop … one of our few really relaxing afternoons in ages probably.

We drove back on Monday via the Barossa and discovered a great lunch venue at The Lane before settling down at a restaurant in Hahndorf for lunch ourselves.

All in all a wonderful weekend!

  1. Hi Kym, happy birthday for last week. We just must catch up. Big change in my life. Gave notice to Brian today after 28 years. Applied for a job with Murray Computers as Apple Macintosh Specialist and to my amazement got it. More pay, better working conditions and excellent benefits. I hope it all works at OK, I am really looking forward to it.
